Movement 101
Don’t just sit there!
- Dance! Ballroom, Belly, Pole, Line, Country and Western and Nia are only examples of the many types of dance available for approximately $15 a class. I take a free form dance movement class called Body Songs offered at my yoga center. Check local YMCA, Community Universities or simply Google (example: Nia Atlanta, Ga)
- Yoga! Try Svaroopa Yoga. The name means The Bliss of Being. This is a gentle supported yoga practice that provides huge health benefits in your breathing, cardio vascular and flexibility. For a class near you, www.masteryoga.org then click Teacher Directory and search by state. Did you know that a number of these teachers are also certified in individual yoga therapy?
- Hiking! For the price of a parking pass, you can spend time in nature exploring a mountain, river, waterfall or park near you. I just returned from California where I enrolled some friends to take me to Muir Woods National Forest. One of them commented that it took an out of state friend to show her the beauty of her own backyard.
- Putting! For a $10 basket of balls, you can spend your lunch hour outside on the putting green.
- Step it UP! 10,000 steps a day is a goal for healthy active adults. Buy a pedometer and get a reality check on where you are and use it to monitor your progress.
- Fun Run/Walk! There are a number of different charities who have annual events. Sign up to walk in one of them and begin practicing daily to get ready for the big day. I did a Google search for “Fun Run Atlanta” and had 2 million results.
- Climb a Rock! Indoor rock climbing is available at gyms, YMCA’s and local Rock Climbing facilities. You may sign up for a lesson with a professional who will ensure you are safely harnessed and also spot for you.
- Festivals! You are probably aware of the major art and music festivals that are in your area. Be adventurous and spend a day trying out something new such as a Greek or Celtic Festival or an Indian Pow Wow. Google: events, your area.
- Take a class! Tai Chi, Swimming, Kickboxing, Horseback Riding and Clogging are only a start to the endless possibilities. Google: class wanted, city.
- Clean House! Of course the normal routine of vacuuming and dusting has its benefits but I’m talking something different. Clean out the clutter and old attachments in your home that hold you back. Cleaning and clearing out is the most effective method of letting go and making room for something new in your life. I like to label bags with the self limiting beliefs (too old, too clumsy, too fat, etc.) and then fill them up and get rid of them.
